Fly Vintage Summer Jewelry Purchases

Oh my! What a fantastic summer it has been. I have kept myself busy with good friends, good food and LOTS of vintage shopping. Even though I don't always post about it, I am ALWAYS on the hunt for amazing vintage. Here are some recent accessory additions to my collection.

A 60's turquoise medallion necklace that I bought at a local flea market as a present for my sister..

but then I kept it. :)

A 70's coral and gold tassel bracelet that I bought off of a coworker

A vintage shell bracelet from a vintage vendor at a Brooklyn street fair.

An enamel 50's horse pin from a local vintage shop - I imagine it was on a young boy's cowboy outfit.

A rhinestone cuff that was a gift from my friend Whitney of Fauxshionable bought on Etsy.com

A gaggle of earrings all purchased in one trip to the thrift store. I can't decide which pair is my favorite.

Luckily my jewelry box is big enough for all of this (plus way too much more). I can't say the same about the room that stores the jewelry box though.

Road Trip, Part Three!

We spent the last leg of our trip in beautiful Newport, RI. We took the detour as a recommendation of a co-worker and had absolutely no expectations. I was stunned when we arrived. From the giant historic mansions to the sandy cliffs and beaches, Newport is top notch.

Road Trip, Part Two!

After 2 days in Hyannis we decided to move up the Cape to Provincetown. The day was overcast and foggy but still so beautiful.

Provincetown is one of the oldest cities in America and truly a unique destination.

I find myself in a summer sloth state and I am not finding blogging joyful as of late. I have been keeping busy with friend visits (more pics to come) , shortened summer work hours and countless movies on Netflix instant play (WORKING GIRL ON REPEAT).

A Leap of Faith

So much can happen in one year.

This time last year I was living with my sister and her family while saving money to move to New York. Moving proved no easy task. It took determination and sacrifice but I received so much support from my family and friends that I felt confident that I would be fine.

Things worked out in my favor and after a year of craziness I can finally look back at a time when I felt truly inspired and motivated to crank out work for this blog.

To Ashley; you are the world's best sister and one of my idols. I truly appreciate all you have done for me. Thank you for taking me in when I needed help most and inspiring me in more ways than one.

Here are a few of my favorites from a year ago.

She then asked me to get out of her shot. Seriously.

Ah. This is a weirdly sexual picture but when you imagine what was on the other side of the camera you might not take it so seriously.

This is my sister and I. The faint hint of face is both magical and creepy to me.

Mirror Mirror

It's pretty obvious that I use mirrors in a lot of my pictures. Like a ton of them. So it was really striking when I found a photograph in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) that reminded me of myself and what I do for this blog.

It may be hard to believe, seeing that my face is on every post for the most part,

but I don't necessarily enjoy being photographed. This blog is as much about celebrating others' fashions as it is about trying to refine my own style. So it's cool to see that people were doing that (almost in the exact same way) back in the '30s.

And she kinda looks like me too. Ha.

Also LOVE this photograph so it was a big treat to see it in person. Martha Graham was the pioneer of modern dance. I find the flow of the fabric to be quite mesmerizing.

My next group of posts will be pictures from my iPistol from a 1973 magazine. Enjoy.

Colorful Super Club

Colors are fun!. I love mixing bold solid colors in my wardrobe. Don't think too much about it and mix and match. Don't be afraid to wear more colors than you are comfortable with and all at the same time.

Here are a few pics I snapped for a super club date with my man at Duane Park in TriBeCa. Side note; Lady Gaga has performed there.

Have recently been channeling the late 40's with my hair styles. I slept in rollers last night. How ridiculous is that concept? Never again. That's what curling irons are for. Last weekend I went to a midnight showing of Pulp Fiction at the IFC Theater near NYU. My bf and I dressed in vintage for the occasion.

I hit up the West Indies parade in Brooklyn. Check out that bling.

I practiced my Karate Kid moves in Red Hook at Dusk.

And I rode my 1954 beach cruiser (Jonny) to the docks to see Mrs. Liberty.

Vintage at The Met

Last weekend I served as host for a much anticipated visit from my family and a great time was had by all! I took them to see as much as possible in the four days that they were here which included my third trip to the Met this summer.... I know there are other museums in New York but this is a must if you have never been.

This is me and my nephew bondercising (bonding + exercising, a term coined by my bro-in law) in one of the exhibits. Wearing an American Apparel t-shirt and a vintage skirt and purse.

As you may recall I also took my friend Whitney (Fauxshionable) to The Met when she visited me last May. We were there mostly to gawk at the Costume Institute but saw a lot of exhibits in the process.

On a recent trip to The Outlands Music Festival in San Francisco last weekend, I was stunned by an amazing performance from Janelle Monáe. The Girl has serious style and talent. She is a mix of a young Michael Jackson, James Brown and Rhianna. I love LOVE her style- the black and white, the bow ties, the menswear... oh my!!

I danced to Marky Mark's, Good Vibrations song for my first grade talent show performance. What was amazing was that neither I nor my dance partner ever choreographed any moves. We both freestyled through the entire song. It was the best 3 minutes of my youth. All eyes on me groovin to Marky Mark in my paint splatter baggy T and leggings while I rocked the roger rabit in as many directional combinations possible. That story has nothing to do with these pictures but It is hot outside in NYC and I look a bit late 80's early 90's here.

Scarf on my head was a gift from fauxshionable. Vintage dress I found recently in a Greenpoint thriftstore that has become my new "go to". It is a handmade 60's mod dress with modern seaming that is very Narcisco Rodriguez.. $5

I love meeting people with impressive personal style. Being around others who dress creatively inspires me to do the same. Recently, I met Kristin Arzt who is currently undergoing a "wear-a-thon" challenge with Bright Young Things where she wears the same dress for the entire summer. Impressive. I was recently sent this vintage inspired cocktail ring from LuShae Jewelry and I am really hyped about it. Typically I am not a cubic zirconia girl. I like my jewelry either very real or very fake but this ring was calling my name. I love the detailing and the tribal mixed metals. It's well made and not too heavy. I could go without some of the CZ overload but I am sure that will grow on me- especially when it I see it twinkling in light. Overall it's a new take on a classic cocktail ring and I can't wait to wear it!

This past year has been eventful and many changes have slowly been shaping this blog. Lately, I have been over-thinking less and doing more, resulting in more Krystle(!)--that is, more unfiltered peeks at what I love and why I love it. My blog is a look at what vintage looks and feels like to me, and I'm determined to bring you even more of my perspective in the coming year.

Here are two of my favorite vintage accessories: An antique nautical brass cuff and a 70's Yves Saint Laurent metal chain link belt that I wear as a necklace. Both were purchased for under $1.

I am not trying to be boastful, but I am trying to prove a point. There is so much disposable clothing/accessories floating around that I encourage you to get creative and find cool things that you already own or are secondhand. Ransack your grandma's closet, dig through your old junk, go to thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, etc. Find something unappreciated and under priced. I consider it fashionable recycling.

I am obsessed with this fabric. No one else has it- the quality is unparalleled and truly vintage. I want about 100 more of these.

This New York Times piece by Cintra Wilson annoyed me. Not the writing but that, basically, Rita Watnick is a snobby hoarder who owns Lily et Cie in Bevery Hills, a five-star vintage store where celebs often frequent. The shop is amazing but Ms. Watnick scares off any customer who isn't a celebrity and/or pin thin and loaded . Read the article.

I visit vintage stores every time I travel to a new city. I have experienced the good, the bad and the rude. Having a bad experience with a worker or owner of a vintage store turns me off no matter how awesome the merchandise is. In the age of Yelp, Facebook and Twitter, the age old tradition of good customer service should never be overlooked.

Fashion has a reputation for being a shallow industry. And there's some truth to that, obviously. While I may be a youngish newbie with little experience compared to the vintage couture industry staples, I know some things that will never change about the person and business woman I am and wish to be, someone who's not an asshole and still good at what she does.

Vintage Make Up "How To" Old Hollywood Glamour

My latest vintage inspiration is the classic film Sullivan's Travels staring Veronica Lake and some other people. Watching the movie reminded me how impeccable old Hollywood makeup was back then and how I need to put more effort into my face.

Using my skillz as a short lived make up artist I bring you a "how to" vintage make up lesson (see diagram below).Other leading ladies that inspired this look with a modern twist; Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, and Greta Garbo.

San Fran's Vintage Bust.

My expectations for vintage shopping in San Francisco were high and sadly I have returned to Chicago disappointed. Here are a few hi-lights and low-lights of my (limited) vintage shopping in the beautiful bayside city.

La Rosa Vintage: The best vintage shop on the street. Also, the most expensive. Friendly staff and amazing 50's high school sweaters that made me swoon. (except for the price) For the straight up retro lover.

Decades: Good selection of vintage flapper dresses. Bad everything else. Non-existent customer service.

Wasteland: Fantastic selection of vintage concert t’s. The rest of the store was a bit underwhelming but I did walk out happy with a vintage bustle blazer for a decent price. (pictured below)

Amoeba Records: Freaking amazing record store.

With the Rodarte for Target dress I was eyeing and the vintage blazer I scored in San Fran.

I recently ran across tween blogger Tavi's interview with the Rodarte sisters about their upcoming collaboration with Target. In the video the sisters said three major films played influence on their line, one of them being Harold and Maude. Hal Ashby’s 1971 cult classic is a uniquely styled look at unconventional love, life and death. (If you haven't seen it, see it.) You can see a lot of Ashby’s influence in current filmmakers such as Wes Anderson (who coincidentally my boyfriend recently interviewed for Spinner.com--check it out; he also kind of dresses in real life like Harold) both in the film making and in the costumes. Last weekend I attended a lovely bash/housewarming party hosted by my friend Sylvia. I am no normal party guest as I tend to eat most of the finger foods, drink most of the alcohol and walk around the place asking the host "Is this vintage?" which typically results in an eye roll and a "who invited her?"

Sylvia is different though in that she actually owns amazing RARE vintage! Feast your eyes on these original Vogue advertisement posters that stopped me dead in my tracks. The posters range from 1910- 1931 and were all found in flea markets by Syl's Mom. Taste runs in the family!

My friend Whitney of fauxshionable and I recently hit up a vintage show where she scored an early 90's Alexander McQueen leather skirt. The skirt is fab and can be worn so many ways. Here are two examples of how we styled it up.

I am in a classic movie phase. Last weekend I saw Gilda, with Rita Hayworth for the first time and I couldn't get enough of those costumes! The hair, the dresses, everything top to bottom was true glamour. Here are a few of my favorite looks from the movie.

A vintage clothing tip learned the hard way;

If you plan on wearing a new vintage find to a big event- test it out first. Wear it to dinner or out shopping BEFORE the event. That way if any "vintage surprises" arise you have plenty of time to have it fixed. Flaws can go unnoticed at the cleaners or during a wash and it's hard to look graceful and elegant with a split seam.

Angry fashionistas everywhere are going to stab me with a platform Louboutin when they know that I have said this but I have something to get off my chest. I saw Breakfast at Tiffany's for the first time EVER the other day and I thought it was..... how do I say this? Odd. Granted, the clothes and Hepburn herself were amazing and deserve every bit of praise ever received however the plot and characters were..... questionable.

I do not wish to give a lengthy rant about the moral integrity of Holly Golightly or the idiotic casting of Mickey Rooney as an angry asian neighbor but I will say this. The clothes were SPECTACULAR. Givenchy created beautiful iconic silhouettes that look fresh and modern to date. Here are a few of my favorite visuals from the movie.
